Our work strengthens the enabling environment at interpersonal and family levels to support women and girls to demand and exercise SRHR.
Health facilities have been performing at reduced capacity due to widespread internal violence, and repetitive displacement, as well as recurrent droughts and floods.
Mayhem Threads prioritizes equipping refugees, migrants, and asylum seekers with practical skills to foster economic independence. Through vocational training programs, participants learn tailoring, textile design, and garment production, blending traditional craftsmanship with modern techniques like digital design tools. This dual focus preserves cultural heritage while ensuring relevance in contemporary markets. Participants also gain entrepreneurship skills, including financial literacy, business management, and marketing, empowering them to launch micro- enterprises or cooperatives.
To sustain economic growth, we provide resources such as sewing machines, materials, and shared workspaces, reducing barriers to entry. Partnerships with ethical fashion brands, local retailers, and e-commerce platforms create market access, enabling participants to sell their products and generate income. By merging skill-building with economic opportunities, Mayhem Threads bridges the gap between marginalization and self-sufficiency.
Our work fosters community cohesion through collaborative projects that unite diverse groups. Workshops and group activities encourage cross-cultural exchange, peer support, and teamwork, helping refugees integrate into local communities while preserving their identities. Traditional textile practices are emphasized, allowing participants to celebrate their cultural heritage and share it with broader audiences, bridging divides between displaced populations and host communities.
Advocacy is woven into their model through fashion shows, exhibitions, and storytelling campaigns. These platforms amplify refugee voices, challenge stereotypes, and highlight their resilience and creativity. By showcasing participants’ work and stories, Mayhem Threads shifts public perceptions, reduces stigma, and attracts ethical consumers who value socially conscious products. This dual focus on integration and advocacy strengthens both individual agency and collective belonging.
Beyond economic and social goals, Mayhem Threads addresses psychological well- being by using fashion as therapy. Creative expression through design helps participants process trauma, rebuild confidence, and reclaim dignity. The act of creating and earning income instils a sense of purpose, countering the helplessness often felt by displaced populations..
Environmental sustainability is also central to our approach. Training in upcycling, waste reduction, and eco-friendly material use aligns participants with global ethical fashion trends, enhancing marketability. By promoting sustainable practices,we ensure long-term viability for both the environment and the livelihoods it supports, creating a model of empowerment that balances personal healing with planetary responsibility.
